- Wilbur N. Jones
Distinguished servicemen and loving father, grandpa and great-grandpa
Wilbur N. Jones, age 83 of Erie, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at St. Mary’s Home East.
He was born in Syracuse, NY on December 8, 1922 a son of the late William and Annie Bingenheimer Jones.
He was a Staff Sergeant in WWII in the Infantry, Company “H”, 7th Infantry Regiment. For valorous conduct in action against the enemy, his heavy machine gun section encountered intense enemy machine gun fire, at 200 yards range, as it advanced towards Neunhof, Germany, Staff Sergeant Jones halted his men and ran forward about 75 yards on a reconnaissance. Although the hostile force concentrated its fire on him, he returned over the flat field and led his section into positions he selected. Then, for over 10 minutes he remained exposed directing his men’s fire, which soon killed the 2-man crew of one gun and enabled riflemen to outflank another and capture 6 Germans. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars.
He worked in the Dairy Department for Loblaws for over 43 years retiring in 1985. He was a member of the United Food Workers Union Local 34 based in Buffalo, NY. He was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan, and loved watching all sports on TV especially Basketball and Boxing.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ann Lissik Jones in 2001 and 3 brothers, Milton, William and Clifford Jones.
He is survived by 2 sons, Ronald D. Jones of South Carolina and Robert E. Jones and his wife Barbara of Erie. 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Ciotti and her husband Jeff, Pamela Jones, Ronald “Butch” Jones, Jr, Christopher Jones and Dawn Renee Post. 2 great-granddaughters, Kira Jones and Rachel Ciotti and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call on Friday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc, 2502 Sassafras St from 2-4 and 7-9 and are invited to further visiting on Saturday at St. Mary’s Home East from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com
