      Steven A. "Hay Baler" Durfey, 69, of Paddy Lake Road died Wednesday at Lee Memorial Hospital, Fulton, after a brief illness.

      A native of Fulton, Mr. Durfey was a life resident of the Fulton-Volney area. He retired in 1987 as a mechanic after 37 years with Fruehauf Corp., Syracuse.

      Mr. Durfey was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Volney, Mount Pleasant Grange 349, Local 317 of the Teamsters Union and its Retirees Association. Mr. Durfey was known in citizen band radio circles by his CB handle, "Hay Baler."

      Surviving are his wife, the former Naomi M. Kerfien; a son, Lawrence A. of Syracuse; two daughters, Betsy A. Durfey and Della M. Daniels, both of Volney; a sister, Lila Aesch of Orange City, Fla.; two brothers, Robert of Cicero and Jacob of Hastings; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

      Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, the Rev. James E. Carroll officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Volney.

      Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St., Fulton.

      Contributions may be made to the memorial fund of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.
