    • Newspaper Obituary - April 29, 1937 Sandy Creek News - Fred B. Stewart and Mrs Grace Barber Stewart - Fred B. Stewart was found dead at his home at 5:15 Tuesday afternoon April 20, 1937. The telegram telling of the death of his wife at Ogdensburg was found stuck in the door where the messenger had left it after failing to gain entrance. Mr. Stewart had been dead for about 12 hours when his body was discovered, it is believed. Fred B. Stewart, son of Ethel M. Stewart and Melissa Damon Stewart, was born in Orwell, October 18, 1875. Ida Grace Barber, daughter of Sherman Barber and Anna Wright Barber was born in Wilkes-Barre PA, July 6, 1876. They were married in Richland on Thanksgiving Day in November 1894. They were both members of the Richland Church of Christ. Mrs Stewart having been baptized November 1, 1891 and Mr. Stewart, January 17 1895. They had lived together on the farm for almost forty years until three or four years ago failing health made it necessary for Mrs Stewart to go to the hospital for care. Her husband accompanied by their daughter, Mrs. Hazel Harrington, visited her on Monday, the day before she passed away. Hers was the third death in the family within a few days, Ethel Stewart, father of Fred Stewart, having passed away in Pulaski March 24 1937. They leave a number of surviving relatives. Surviving Mr. Stewart are two sisters, Mrs Grace Lyons of Pulaski and Mrs. Blanche Price of Fulton. Mrs Stewart is survived by two brothers, Rolla Barber of Pulaski and Clinton Barber of Sandy Pond. They also leave one daughter, Mrs Hazel Harrington of Pulaski, Port Ontario and one son, Robert Stewart of Richland. There are three grandchildren, Irene Harrington, Flora King, and Edith Stewart. In addition to farming, Mr. Stewart served as an employee of the New York Central Railroad for about forty years and was a member of the Railroad Brotherhood. He was of a home loving nature and fond of his family. His tragic death alone in his home, due to monoxide fumes from a faulty oil heating stove came as a distinct shock to the entire community. He had visited his son Robert Stewart, and family on Monday evening and going home and returning for the night had evidently lapsed into unconsciousness overcome by the poisonous fumes without being aware that the stove was acting badly. Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stewart were held Friday at 2pm from Church of Christ, Richland, Rev. W. C. Chapman conducted the service with burial in Richland Cemetery.

Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 21, 1937 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Richland Man Is Victim Of Fumes From Oil Heater - Fred Stewart Succumbs Without Knowing Wife Had Died In Ogdensburg - Pulaski, April 21 - Fred Stewart, 62, well-known resident of the town of Richland and an employee of the New York Central railroad practically all his life, was found dead at 3:15 Tuesday afternoon at his home in the Springbrook district between Pulaski and Richland. The discovery was made by his son, Robert Stewart, who with his wife, had gone to the house to make arrangements for the funeral of Mrs. Fred Stewart, who had died in Ogdensburg. The telegram telling of the elder Mr. Stewart's wife's death was found stuck in the door where the messenger had left it after failing to gain entrance. A burned out kerosene heating stove from which carbon monoxide had come was believed to have been the cause of death. This is the third death in the Stewart family within a month, Fred Stewart's father, Ethel Stewart, having died in Pulaski March 24; the wife dying in Ogdensburg Monday, and Mr. Stewart himself dying some time Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Mr. Stewart had been regularly employed on the section gang out of Pulaski working under Foreman O. Look, but Monday, due to the critical condition of Mrs. Stewart, had not worked so nothing was thought of his failure to report for work Tuesday. He was in the village Monday evening but started for home early in the evening, this being the last he was seen alive. On discovering the body, the son notified Sergeant Roy Peterson of the state police and Assistant District Attorney Clarence J. Gorman, Dr. A. G. Dunbar, town health officer, was called and after an investigation the cause of death was given as accidental from inhaling carbon monoxide, and the body was released to Paul K. Foster. It was the opinion of the physician that Mr. Stewart had been dead about 12 hours when the body was discovered. Mr. Stewart was born the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ethel Stewart and was born in the town of Richland and had always made his home in the vicinity. He was well known in railroad circles from his long employment in that line. His wife was Mrs. Grace Barber Stewart, who probably predeceased him by only a few hours. She had been a patient in Ogdensburg since 1931 and word had been received of her critical illness only a day or two ago. Besides the son, Robert Stewart, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Harrington of Pulaski; two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Lyons of Pulaski and Mrs. Blanche Clark of Bowens Corners and three grandchildren.

Cause of Death: Carbon Monoxide Poisoning from a defective stove in his home.
