Julius A. "Bud" Hefti Jr., 85, of 363 Flower Ave. E., died Monday in Samaritan Medical Center.
Born Jan. 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, son of Julius A. Sr. and Leonore Calaghan Hefti, he graduated from Eastchester High School, Scarsdale, where he was captain of the football team.
He served in the Army during World War II in the 10th Mountain Division, 87th Regiment. He was a member of the elite mountain training group. Mr. Hefti served in the Pacific and European theaters. He was a member of the spearhead invasion group on Kiska Island in the Aleutian Islands. He was an adviser on winter warfare to the general of the Army in the Second Division and served with the Third Army in Europe under Gen. George S. Patton. His specialty was winter warfare and he taught skiing to the Army.
Mr. Hefti was a ski instructor for 55 years. He began his career at the Hanna Snyder Ski School of New Hampshire and taught at numerous resorts in the north country. He was a ski instructor and from 1947 to 1953 was general manager at Snow-bowl, South Colton, which was owned by St. Lawrence University. He established the ski school at Dry Hill Ski Center and demonstrated skiing technique on a Watertown television station.
He was a manager for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. for the construction of hydroelectric power dams for 35 years, retiring in 1981.
He married Mae Louise Osborn on Aug. 28, 1948. She died July 25, 1986. He had been previously married.
He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division Association and numerous ski associations, including Old Hutsman Association, Harvard Hutsman, Appalachian Mountain Club and Zeland Mountain Association. He was a member and past board member of the Crescent Yacht Club, Chaumont, and a former Boy Scout leader.
Surviving are five sons, Daniel A. Hefti, , Pulaski, Jonathan O. Hefti, Manlius, Christopher P. Hefti, Watertown, Robert A. Morrison, Saudi Arabia, and Rodney Dorr, Clermont; three brothers, John, Delray, Fla., Robert, Scarsdale, and Paul, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Lt. Col. James Hefti, and two sisters, Shirley Hefti and Mary Bayless, died before him.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Theodore Crosby, associate pastor of Holy Family Church, officiating. Burial with military honors by the 10th Mountain Division will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
