    • Newspaper Obituary - August 13, 1931 Sandy Creek News - Our community was greatly shocked and saddened by the news of the drowning of Merle E. Dingman, which occurred on the night of July 31. Mr. Dingman, with three companions from the "Sealright" in Fulton, was swimming in the Oswego river, and suddenly without a sound of warning, sank from sight. When he did not come to the surface, the others became frightened and began diving in an unsuccessful attempt to locate him, but finally giving up in despair they reported the accident to the police, who recovered his body a few hours later. From the facts that he failed to come to the surface and that there was almost no water found in his lungs, it is believed that he suffered a heart attack, presumably brought on by the sudden chilling in the cold water. The departed was born August 17, 1891, the son of Charles and Jennie Dingman. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, three children, Ervin, Muriel and Naomi of Fulton; the parents; a sister, Mrs. Florence Gerow, of Oswego; a brother, Earl Dingman, of Lacona, and a foster sister, Mrs. Leila Carr of Sandy Creek. Funeral services, which were here at the home of his parents in Sandy Creek, Monday afternoon, August 3, 1931, were attended by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. The profusion of beautiful flowers expressed sympathy for the bereaved ones, and love for the departed. Merle Dingman, a man whose genial, sunny nature and likable traits, won him countless friends wherever he went, will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and the deep sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved family, especially the aged parents, who suffered a similar loss twenty-one years ago, when their eldest son, Ervin, was killed by the cars.
