      Theda Mowen, 78, of 44740 County Route 100, Wellesley Island, wife of John C. Mowen, died Friday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan.

      A memorial service will be at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Wellesley Island United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thana Kibbe, pastor, officiating.

      There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa. Donations may be made to Wellesley Island United Methodist Church in care of Helen Fraser, County Route 100, Wellesley Island, N.Y. 13640, or to the Wellesley Island Ambulance Squad in care of Charles Lindl.

      Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Sharon Lawrence, Pulaski, and Judith Pember, Portland, Ore.; a son, John C. Jr., Moundsville, W.Va.; a sister, Ella Marion Young, Fulton; five grandchildren, a great-grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

      Born April 13, 1918, in Pulaski, daughter of Floyd and Bertha Hutchinson Chase, she attended Pulaski Academy and graduated from the Watertown School of Commerce. She was a clerk for the Agricultural Insurance Co., Watertown.

      She married John C. Mowen of Chatham, N.J., Sept. 9, 1942. The couple moved to Pulaski in 1975 and to Wellesley Island in the early 1980s.

      Mrs. Mowen was a member of Wellesley Island United Methodist Church, where she was a trustee. She was an animal lover and a founder of United Friends of Homeless Animals, Pulaski. She was an accomplished organ player.
