- Fredrick I. Potter, 78,of Van Auken Rd., Lacona passed away at home on March 25, 2016. Fred was born August 4, 1937, in Redfield, the son of Harry and Mabel Barker Potter. He graduated in 1956 from Pulaski High School. Fred married Helen Rupracht on September 13, 1958. After high school, he owned a milk and paper trucking business for several years, then worked construction. He started working for Oswego County Highway in 1968, running the snow plows, striper truck and dispatching, until finally retiring in 1997. He has also owned the Fred Potter Trash Removal business for more than 40 years.
Fred had been a member of the Lacona Fire Department for 40 years where he held positions of Chief, President, Vice President, Lieutenant, Director, Engine Foreman, 2nd Assistant Chief, Rescue Captain and Safety Officer. In 2006, he was awarded Firefighter of the Year. He was a member of the Rail City Fire Department, a life member of the Agricultural Society of Oswego County, where he was past President, Sr. Vice President, Oswego County Emergency Preparedness, EMT, President of the Oswego County Local CSEA, member of Oswego County Chiefs Association, President of Oswego County Firefighters Association and was currently a Councilman on the Boylston Town Board. He enjoyed collecting fire trucks and other related fire articles. He attended Sandy Creek Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife, Helen, four daughters, Valerie (Tom) Marshall of Orwell, Robin (Tim) Rudd of Lacona, Melanie (Gary) Greene of Syracuse and Jennifer (Scott) Craft of Rochester, three sons, Mark (Jamie) Potter of Oswego, Rex (Tonya) Potter of Sandy Creek and Gregg (Patty)Potter of Lacona. Three sisters, Shirley Purvis of Vero Beach, FL, Evelyn (Charles) Masuicca of Pulaski, Erma Schroeder of Richland and one brother, Charles (Mary Lou) Potter of Ville Platte, LA, 14 Grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and one due in July, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert in 1999 and Terry in 2011.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the Foster Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski, with burial in the Boylston-Sandy Creek Cemetery on County Route 15. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
