John W. Cobb, Jr., 76, of No. Main St. passed away Wednesday evening, April 13th at his home under the care of his loving wife and family.
John was born in Richland, NY, September 23, 1934, a son of J. Winfield and Nina Shepard Cobb. He was a 1954 graduate of Union Academy Belleville. He served with the US Navy Seabees, receiving his honorable discharge on August 26, 1962 and continued his Navy service with the US Naval Reserve until August 18, 1982.
John was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was employed by General Telephone for 32 years retiring as a Switchman on November 1, 1992.
He was a volunteer firefighter for 59 years, serving 46 years as a member of the Adams Fire Department and was a life member of the Belleville Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Chief of the Adams Fire Dept. from 1974 - 1977 and was selected Fireman of the Year in 1990. He was currently serving as President of the Adams Fire Corporation.
At the time of his passing, John was a Jefferson County Fire Coordinator for Zone 1, a Jefferson County Volunteer Fire Investigator (Car 200) and was certified with the International Association of Arson Investigators, Inc. He was past president of the Jeff. County Volunteer Fire Chiefs and Firefighters Association, a member of the NYS Fire Investigators Chapter 23, the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, a member of the Jefferson Co. Fire Advisory Board and the Fireman's Association of the State of New York (FASNY).
He was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Adams and a former member of the Jefferson Co. Planning Board. He was a member and past master of the Rising Light Lodge #637 F & AM, Belleville, and a member of the American Legion 586, Adams. John participated in a bowling league at the Adams Bowling Club and golfed for many years at Tomacy's, and the Adams Country Club. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
John married Velma M. Cornell, June 11, 1960 at the Belleville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Miles Hutchinson officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Velma. His daughter Lynne Sischo and her husband, David of Rodman. His son John C. and his wife Lory of Adams. Two granddaughters, Hayley M. Crimmins and her husband Daniel, Apalachin, NY, and Lauren M. Sischo, Canton. Two grandsons, Zachary J.A. Cobb and his fiance' Nicole Nichols, and John W. Cobb, all of Adams. An Uncle Walter S. Cobb and his wife Esther, Lacona. One nephew, two nieces and several cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert V. and Weyland Cobb.
The funeral will be 12 noon Saturday, April 16th, at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville with Rev. Charles Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Belleville. Calling hours are Friday, April 15th from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Nina J. A reception for friends and family will be held Saturday at the Adams Fire Hall following the graveside committal rites.
