- MAN KILLS WIFE, SON, THEN SELF - THE FORMER PULASKI RESIDENT LIVED IN ARIZONA.
Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - July 30, 1993
A former Pulaski resident killed his common-law wife and their 10-year-old son before turning the gun on himself Monday at their home in Phoenix, Ariz., police said.
Police concluded that 41-year-old Greg M. Larrabee had a run of bad luck he couldn't take anymore, so he decided to die and take his family with him.
A relative found the bodies of Larrabee, Portia Caton, 42, and their son Greg Michael Larrabee, 10, in the family's north Phoenix home. All were dead from gunshot wounds.
"Neighbors and relatives indicated that he hadn't worked in some time, and he wasn't feeling good about his prospects," said Leo Speliopoulos, media officer for the Phoenix Police Department.
"There's nothing much left to investigate," he said. "All the evidence pointed to a murder-suicide with him being the shooter."
Larrabee, a native of Syracuse and a 1971 graduate of the State Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred, moved to Arizona 15 years ago in hopes of making a career as a photographer.
He apparently found free-lance work but was forced to rely on other jobs to pay the rent. After losing two jobs in recent months, he became despondent and talked about moving back to upstate New York, Speliopoulos said.
Larrabee had worked for Eastman Kodak Co. He graduated from Pulaski Central School in 1969.
Surviving are his parents, William and Edith Larrabee of Pulaski; two brothers, William II of Pulaski and Scott M. of East Syracuse; three nephews; and a niece.
