Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 16, 1948 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Last Rites Held For Wayne Phelps, Saturday - Last rites for Wayne Phelps, 47, whose sudden death occurred late last Wednesday afternoon, were held Saturday at two o’clock from his late home in Forest Drive, with Rev. James N. Pauley officiating. Interment was made in Pulaski cemetery. Although Mr. Phelps had suffered a heart attack, about two weeks ago, he had recovered and, feeling much better on Wednesday, accepted an invitation to ride to the beach with some friends. He had just stepped into the Lighthouse hotel, when he collapsed, from a heart attack from which he never recovered. Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Tanner Phelps’ a son, Donald Phelps, and two brothers, G. Edward, Pulaski and Glen Phelps, Auburn, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Rossman, Pulaski. He was born at Port Ontario in March, 1901, the son of John Franklin and Julia Tilkins Phelps. Most of his life had been spent in or near Pulaski. He attended Pulaski school and played baseball on the school team, and afterward played shortstop on the old town team, predecessors of the Panthers. Mr. Phelps was employed on the State road gang working out of Pulaski for a great many years, but during the war engaged in machine work for the Pulaski Metal Company, where he was employed at the time of his death.
