    • Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, April 19, 1997 Post-Standard, The -Syracuse, New York - Deceased Name: JAMES L. STEWART - James L. Stewart, 81, of 756 S. Main St. died Thursday at Cortland Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Columbus, he lived in Groton most of his life and was a machinist at Smith-Corona 30 years. He also was a self-employed farmer. Mr. Stewart was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8158 in Dryden and active with area pool and horseshoe leagues. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. He received a Purple Heart. Surviving are a son, Larry Stewart of Groton; a daughter, Darla Stewart of Syracuse; six grandchildren, Travis and Scott Stewart, Christy, Steffany and Samantha Stewart and Andrew Garey; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Edgar, Harry and Terry, all of Fabius; three sisters, Elizabeth Stewart of Fabius, and Gladys Musser and Arlene Lang, both of Canastota; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shurtleff Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert N. Richardson officiating. Burial, with military honors, is in Groton Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton.
