- Newspaper Obituary - May 19, 1955 Pulaski Democrat - Ernest Stevens, 38 Dies Suddenly - Ernest Stevens, 38, died very suddenly at his home in River St., last Thursday evening. He had been burning rubbish in the back yard and the fire spread to nearby grass. He summoned his wife to call the Ringgold Fire Department and upon her return, she found him lying on the ground, near the fire. The firemen tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead a short time after, by Dr. H. H. McChesney, family doctor. Mr. Stevens had been ill with a heart condition for the past two years. Services were held from the Taylor Funeral Home, Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James N. Pauley officiating. Interment was made in Pulaski Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Julia Guthrie Stevens; two sons, Gary and Craig; a daughter, Judy; and an aunt, Miss Flora Davis of California. Mr. Stevens was born in Syracuse, June 3, 1916 the son of Harol and Lilyon Davis Stevens. He moved to California as a young boy, receiving his education there. Later he returned to Cortland where he attended high school. He came to Pulaski 15 years ago and married Miss Julia Guthrie Jan. 9, 1941 and has since lived at their present home. He was employed as bookkeeper at the Franklin Chevrolet Co. at the time of his death.
