Gary A. Gilson, 63 of Mexico died Thursday, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Oswego, the son of the late
Harold "Pete" and Gerry Simser Gilson Jr. Gary retired in 2009 after 36 years with the Oswego County Highway Department. He then took a part time position at the Oswego County Emergency Response Training Center, a job he truly enjoyed until his final retirement in November 2014. He also worked for V.F. Linoleum of Pulaski.
Gary enjoyed and Umpired for the New York State Amateur Softball Association. Gary had 24 years of dedicated service to his community in Fire Service. He served 15 years as a member of the Sandy Creek Fire Department, serving as a Fire Fighter, Assistant Chief and Chief. He was a founding member of the NOCA Ambulance Corps, where he served for several years. He served for 5 years as a New York State Fire Instructor. Gary was a four-year member of the Minetto Fire Department, serving as a Fire Fighter and Assistant Chief. He was a seven-year member of the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department, serving as a Fire Fighter and on several committees. Gary was an organ donor.
Gary is survived by his wife, the former Debbie Walker; his daughter, Charlene Gilson-Wright of Clayton; three stepchildren, Tammi (Shaun) Hull of Altmar, Jamie (John) Mandigo of Pulaski and Dan (Jessica Loomis) McNitt of Altmar; 5 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and six stepgrandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Bonnie (Howard) Loomis of Pulaski; two brothers, Edward (Donna) Gilson of Pulaski and Terry (Greta) Gilson of Northport, FL; along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, from the Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Avenue, Mexico. Burial will be in the South Richland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
