The funeral for Richard L. "Dick" McNitt, 63, of 1448 County Route 15, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek, with the Rev. Wayne Grow, pastor of Sandy Creek Community Church, officiating. Burial will be private.
Mr. McNitt, a lifelong resident of the Lacona-Sandy Creek area, died Friday at his home.
Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. McNitt was a boilermaker, working out of Local 175, Oswego, for 40 years and retiring in 1995.
Born Oct. 5, 1942, in Syracuse, son of Leland and Delphine Castler McNitt, he attended Sandy Creek schools. He married Sally A. Gladle on Sept. 2, 1961, at Boylston Wesleyan Church.
Mr. McNitt was a member of the Mannsville Fire Department and Rescue Squad from 1961 to 1968 and, since 1972, had been a member of the Sandy Creek Volunteer Fire Department, of which he also was a past chief and former treasurer.
He also was in charge for many years of the demolition derby held annually at the Oswego County Fair.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter and her husband, Roxanne and Rusty VanBrocklin, Monroe, Ga.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Rick and Dawn, Randy and Terri, Ryan and Donna, and Rory, all of Lacona; a brother and his wife, Ronald and Joanne, Belleville; his stepmother, Lucy McNitt, Ellisburg; 17 grandchildren, a great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Robin McNitt, died in 1982. A sister, Margaret A. Patten, died in 2004.
Donations may be made to the Sandy Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
