- Harold Abel, 97, Sarasota, died Oct. 31, 2002. He was born Dec. 21, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Sarasota in 1969, from Albany, N.Y. He retired as director of recreation for the state of New York, Department of Mental Health. He served as a board member of Sapphire Shores Community Association and was a life member of the Sarasota Succulent Society.
He graduated from Syracuse University with bachelor's degrees. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Viola; a daughter, Audrey Adam of Stonington, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Frances M. Sullivan of Dunedin; a stepson, John P. McGrath of Farmington, Conn.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be later. National Cremation Society, Sarasota chapter, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sarasota Succulent Society, 1310 38th St., Sarasota, FL 34234. Published in Herald Tribune on Nov. 2, 2002
