    • Thomas Buckingham was baptized 11/28/1646. He began to preach at Saybrook, CT and became one of the most noted colonial preachers. He was one of the founders of Yale College (1701) and Yale's first commencement was held at his house in Saybrook. He evidently held a high rank among the clergymen of the time as he was a moderator of the famous synod which convened at Saybrook and formed the platform for the government of the churches in 1708. Mary Hooker, his second wife, was the widow of Samuel Hooker of Farmington, CT. He and his first wife, Hester Hosmer, are buried in the Old Saybrook burying grounds (Cypress Cemetary). Upon the 200th anniversary of Yale University an iron fence was placed around their gravesites and a memorial plaque was attached to commemorate Thomas as their founder.
