- September 26, 1885 ~ Ammasa A. Erskine, age 73 years, 7 months, Widow, Farmer, born in Vermont, Resident of Richland Township for 14 months, Son of Solomon Erskine and Betsey Hastings, died at South Richland of paralysis of the heart.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 1, 1885 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - South Richland - Mr. Amasa Erskine died at the home of his son, Mr. L. Erskine, Saturday morning, September 26, in the 74th year of his age. Brothers and son carried him to a resting place in a shady nook in the meadow near the house. We understand that he will be disinterred and taken to Madison for final burial, this having been his home for many years.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, October 1, 1885 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In South Richland, September 26, 1885, Amasa Atwood Erskine, aged 73 years and 11 months. A. A. Erskine, son of Salmon and Betsy Hastings Erskine, was the second of their seventeen children. He was born in Canada and was adopted by his Uncle Atwood of Vermont when a small boy. Mr. Atwood died when Amasa was about sixteen. When he was 18 years old he taught the first school in the Hooper district log school house. When about 20 he was married to Elmira Bennett, of Ellisburgh, and he and his older brother, Edward, bought what is now the west end of Henry Miller’s farm, and they lived together in a log house. He lived there a few months when he removed to Belmont, Madison County, where his sons, Lafayette and Irving, were born. His wife, who was a very amiable woman and to whom he was tenderly attached, died soon after. About a year after her death, he was married to Mrs. Sarah Wightman Martin, of Parish. To them were born four children, Wightman, Burnie, Carlo and Rosalia. After living in Belmont, Cazenovia, Morrisville, etc., he finally settled in Eaton. About eight years ago his second wife died. In July, 1874, he came to South Richland, where he remained until his death last Saturday. He passed the best part of his life in the school room, he being a very successful teacher. His funeral was held yesterday at the residence of his son, Lafayette Erskine. The services were conducted by Rev. N. M. Caton. The nearest relatives of the deceased acted as bearers. The remains were temporarily interred in the maple grove back of the house, to be removed to Madison County later in the season.
Newspaper Article - Thursday, November 24, 1887 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - South Richland - The body of Amasa Erskine, who died two years ago in October, and was interred on the premises of his son, L. Erskine, was on Saturday last disinterred and taken to the McClellan Cemetery for a final burial.
