- January 20, 1897 ~ Frank H. Mahaffy, age 52 years, Married, Teamster, born in Pulaski, Son of Samuel Mahaffy of Ireland and Ester Cropsey of Lee, Oneida County, New York, died in Pulaski of La Grippe and heart failure.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 27, 1897 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - The sad news spread through the community, last Wednesday evening that Francis H. Mahaffy had expired. He was taken sick the Friday previous and so short in duration was his sickness that many of his dear friends were not aware that he was dangerously ill. His death is regretted by a great circle of friends. His funeral held at the M. E. church, last Saturday afternoon, was largely attended. The Masons, Grand Army, Firemen attended as organizations. Rev. A. D. Webster gave a memorial address, the Masons conducted their burial service in the Grand Army officiated at the grave. The following is from the address delivered by Mr. Webster: "Francis H. Mahaffy was born in Pulaski, January 10, 1845, and that his death was just a little over 52 years of age. He was one of a family of seven children, five of whom are living, three brothers and two sisters, well known in this community. He was only 16 years of age when the war broke out. His older brother, Samuel, enlisted in 1862, and died at New Orleans, Mississippi, August 25, 1863. At that time it was impossible to obtain his body, that it might be brought home and buried among friends, but his funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. H. Lamb in this house, a little over 33 years ago. On that sad, sad day no member of the family was a more sincere mourner than Frank, as he has always been familiarly called. March 8, 1865, being a little over 19 years old at the time, he enlisted in Company I, 193 New York Volunteers and he was discharged as sergeant January 18, 1866. He was stationed most of the time of his service in the forts about Harper's Ferry. Comrade Julius Macy, of this place, and Lyman Learned of South Richland, as well as others from the town of Sandy Creek, were in the same company. On June 6, 1883 he was joined in marriage to Miss Isabella Bruce. To them were born two daughters, who are now respectively 10 and 5 years of age. He was a member of Pulaski Lodge No. 415, F. & A. M. He was also a member of J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G. A. R., of which he had just been installed as Senior Vice Commander. He has been for some time a member of the Relief Committee of the Post, and in all calls for help from needy soldiers for their families, or any claims which were presented, his sympathies were a large and beneficent, and nothing but the lack of funds, or an adverse decision on the part of the other members of the committee could withhold the desired aid.
