Newspaper Obituary - April 24, 1969 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Lacona Man Killed When Car Hits Train - A tragedy that shook this community occurred last Thursday night, April 17, 1969 at 9:30 when Walter G. Weisenburger of Lacona was killed by a train on the grade crossing on the Miller road. Mr. Weisenburger, who was only 31 years old, was one of the outstanding young men of this community; very well liked, civic-minded, devoted to his family, a past Master of Sandy Creek Masonic Lodge, a member of the Lacona Fire Department, and a member of the Sandy Creek Baptist church. He had been employed by General Electric in Syracuse since 1956 except for a short period when he was self-employed. His wife and children, his mother and sisters, have the sympathy of the community in their loss. The accident occurred when Mr. Weisenburger's car, eastbound on the Miller Road south of Lacona, ran into a southbound Penn-Central freight train. State police said the impact came at the 37th and 38th cars of the train. It is thought that fog hid the train until too late for him to stop the car. He had gone to Sandy Creek to have his car filled with gasoline in preparation for the trip to work next morning. He was returning home by way of the Miller Road, having called at the home of his brother-in-law, Don Minor Jr., who lives near the crossing. He was found by Levi Philips and was taken to the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown where he was pronounced dead. His funeral service was held Monday afternoon at one o'clock at the First Baptist church, with the Rev. Dr. Virgil Hager, pastor, officiating. The burial was in the South Richland cemetery. Many friends and members of organizations to which Mr. Weisenburger belonged called at the O'Brien funeral home on Sunday afternoon and in the evening. Mr. Weisenburger was a Past Master of the Sandy Creek Lodge No. 564 F. & A.M., having served as Master last year with distinction. Masonic rites were conducted for him at 8 p.m. by the members of Sandy Creek Lodge. There was an unusually large delegation present for the service. It numbered about 140 of his fellow Masons who came in tribute to him and included representatives from all the Masonic lodges in the Oswego district. He had always lived in this community. He was born September 6, 1937 in Watertown and was the son of Mrs. Kathleen Gibbs Weisenburger and the late Emil Fredrick Weisenburger of Lacona. He attended the Sandy Creek Central school, graduating in 1956. On February 23, 1957 he was married in the Sandy Creek Baptist church to Miss Charlotte Kast, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Kast of Sandy Creek. He leaves his wife, a son, Emil Fredrick, 11 years old, and a daughter, Deborah Anne, 9; his mother, Mrs. Kathleen Weisenburger of Lacona and two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Joyce) Guyette, Lacona, and Mrs. Robert (Karen) Bacon of Syracuse.
