- ROBERT J. GAFFNEY, 78, DIES IN WATERTOWN

Robert J. Gaffney, 78, of 135 Haley St., retired special delivery carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, died at 3:51 p.m. Saturday at the House of the Good Samaritan, where he had been a patient since Thursday.
A funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday at Holy Family Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Cummings Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Jane M. Gaffney Nursing Memorial Scholarship Fund at Jefferson Community College, Coffeen Street, Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
Surviving are three sons, Robert W., Adams Center, Steven P., Gouverneur, and Phillip A., Salisbury, Md.; two daughters, Carolyn J. Gaffney, Watertown, and Mrs. Robert (Suzanne K.) Kelley, Parma, Ohio; nine grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A daughter, Jane M. Gaffney, died Feb. 1, 1968, at the age of 16. Two brothers, Donald A. and Paul L. Gaffney, and two sisters, Helen L. and Rosemary Gaffney, also died previously.
He was born March 4, 1914, in Watertown, a son of William E. and Elizabeth Marie O'Connor Gaffney. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy.
Mr. Gaffney was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II.
On Nov. 27, 1948, he married Jean F. Alton in the rectory of Holy Family Church with the Rev. Frederick P. Shue, then assistant pastor, officiating. Mrs. Gaffney, a retired teacher, died May 21, 1992. She was 68.
Mr. Gaffney was a special delivery carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Watertown. He retired after 40 years of service.
He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and a communicant of Holy Family Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 61, where he formerly served as treasurer for some 20 years, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1400, the Watertown Elks Lodge and the North Side Improvement League.
