Former Tupper Lake resident John M. Gaffney, 77, James Square Health and Rehabilitation Center, Syracuse, died Wednesday at the rehabilitation center.
Mr. Gaffney was a treatment team worker in psychiatric care for 25 years at Sunmount Developmental Center in Tupper Lake, retiring in 1980. He had also worked at Utica State Hospital, Rome State Hospital and Mount McGregor Correctional Facility at Saratoga Springs.
Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Sauquoit, son of Charles and Bridget Dobson Gaffney, he graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School, Utica, and from John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio, and received a master's degree from Syracuse University. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
He married Rita White. She died in 1988.
Surviving are a son, Daniel Gaffney, Pulaski; two sisters, Mary Halpin, Utica, and Jane McManus, Florida, and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony of Padula Church, Chadwicks. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Heintz Funeral Service, Utica.
