- RETIRED TEACHER JEAN GAFFNEY DIES AT AGE 68

Jean F. Gaffney, 68, of 135 Haley St., died Thursday morning at her home after a short illness.
A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cummings Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church with Monsignor Robert J. McCarthy, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Calling hours were scheduled for 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Jane M. Gaffney Nursing Scholarship Fund, Jefferson Community College, Coffeen Street, Watertown, N.Y. 13601, or to Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., 714 Washington St., Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
Surviving are her husband, Robert J.; three sons, Robert W., Adams Center, Steven P., Gouverneur, and Phillip A., Salisbury, Md.; two daughters, Carolyn J. Gaffney, Watertown, and Mrs. Robert (Suzanne K.) Kelley, Parma, Ohio; nine grandchildren; a brother, Harold W. "Bill" Alton, Batavia; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A daughter, Jane M., died at the age of 16 on Feb. 1, 1967.
Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Syracuse, daughter of Harold A. and Sarah Hayford Alton, she was graduated from Nottingham High School and Syracuse University and did post-graduate work at Syracuse and St. Lawrence universities and at Potsdam and Oswego state university colleges.
She married Robert J. Gaffney Nov. 27, 1948, in the rectory of Holy Family Church with the Rev. Frederick P. Shue, then assistant pastor, officiating.
Mrs. Gaffney was employed as a French and Spanish teacher in Unidella, Brownville, and at Case Junior and North Elementary schools in Watertown. She retired from Watertown High School in June 1980.
She was a communicant of Holy Family Church, a member of Tomacy's Golf Club, Adams, the Watertown Golf Club, and was an avid bridge player with the American Contract Bridge League.
She was also a member of the College Women's Club of Jefferson County, the American Association of University Women, the Jefferson County Historical Society, and the Morning Musicales.
