      JOHN GRANT HOTCHKISS FORMER TEACHER, MAYOR

      John Grant Hotchkiss, 81, of 205 E. Main St., died Wednesday at Alice Hyde Memorial Hospital, Malone.

      Mr. Hotchkiss was a teacher at Chateaugay Central School for 37 years, retiring in 1982.

      Born Aug. 10, 1917, in Pulaski, son of Ralph and Mae Calkins Hotchkiss, he graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1935. He received a bachelor of science degree from Oswego State Teachers College in 1940 and began his teaching career at Chateaugay High School.

      He was drafted into the Army in July 1941 and served four and a half years during World War II, both in the Pacific and European theaters. He received officer’s training at Harvard Business School, was commissioned first lieutenant, and was honorably discharged in December 1945 before returning to Chateaugay to teach.

      He married Jeanette Robinson on Dec. 8, 1945, in Syracuse.

      For 35 years, the couple owned and operated Hotchkiss Interiors, an interior decorating studio, retiring in 1988.

      He was mayor of Chateaugay from 1975 to 1991.

      As a member of the Chateaugay First Presbyterian Church, he served as elder and clerk of session. He was also a member of Malone Elks Lodge 1303, Chateaugay American Legion Post 875, Frontier Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons 517, Order of Eastern Star, New York State Teachers Association and Franklin County Historical and Museum Society. Mr. Hotchkiss was a founder and first president of the Burchacon Housing Association, served on the Community Action Council for Franklin County and was past president of Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

      He is survived by his wife, and two sons, Charles, Cape Cod, Mass., and Brian David, Boston, Mass.

      A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chateaugay Presbyterian Church with Bonnie Wynn officiating. The family will receive callers at the church following the service.
