Matthew McArthur Brown Jr., 76, North Syracuse, formerly of Pulaski, died Monday of a heart attack at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse.
Mr. Brown was a retired electrical engineer for General Electric, Syracuse.
Born Jan. 2, 1928, in Pulaski, son of Matthew M. and Myrtle Brown, he graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1945, attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill., where he took a 10-month course in radio and then joined the Merchant Marine. He graduated from Officer's Candidate School at Fort Riley, Kan., in 1951, and served in the Army as a lieutenant during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
He married Beatrice Mae Hoaglund of Kansas City, Mo., on Feb. 16, 1952, in Stanton, Iowa. The marriage ended in divorce.
He was an accomplished bridge player and had attained life master status.
Surviving are a daughter, Marcia Brown, Severn, Md.; three sons, Mark, Greenville, S.C., Craig, Camden, Maine, and Brian, Syracuse; three sisters, Annie Matacchiero, Albany, Marion Greene, Schenectady, and Lois Tanner, Altmar; a brother, Robert, Sackets Harbor; his companion, Doris Turner Beach, Sackets Harbor, eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A sister, Evelyn Janet Darling, and two brothers, Raymond and Archibald, died before him.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, Cicero.

Matthew McArthur Brown Jr., age 76, died Monday, April 26, 2004, following a brief illness. He was born in Pulaski, New York on January 2, 1928, to Matthew Sr. and Myrtle Brown. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska (BSEE) and retired from General Electric. Matt served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. He also was an accomplished bridge player, attaining Life Master status. Mr. Brown is survived by: one daughter Marcia of Severn, MD; three sons, Mark of Greenville, SC, Craig of Camden, ME, Brian of Syracuse, NY; eight grandchildren and one great- grandson. He is also survived by three sisters, Annie Matacchiero, Marion Greene and Lois Tanner; one brother, Robert Brown; and special friend Doris Beach. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn, and brothers Raymond and Archibald. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, at Faith Lutheran Church, Rte. 31 Cicero, NY. DeWitt Memorial Funeral Home... we never take advantage of your disadvantage.
