- "The Tomahawk," Wednesday, September 17, 1969 DEATHS «tab»Jesse H. Garland, Jr., 87, of Shady Valley, died in a Knoxville hospital Tuesday, 8:40 p.m., after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, a life-long resident of Shady Valley, and son of the late Jesse H. Garland, Sr., and Mary Elizabethton Garland. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Harmon Chapel Christian Church. His wife, Mrs. Eliza Jane Garland, passed away Aug. 26, 1969. «tab»Survivors include two sons, Cebert, Springfield, O., and I. C., Shady Valley; two sisters, Mrs. Deward Blevins, Shady Valley, and Mrs. Ray Price, Akron, O.; two brothers, Robert M. and Mitchel G., both of Shady Valley; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. «tab»Funeral services were conducted from the Harmon Chapel Christian Church Friday, 2 p.m., with Clay Bailey, minister, officiating. Burial was in the Blevins Cemetery. «tab»Pall-bearers[sic] were Wiley Elmer Blevins, Bobby Long, R. D. Garland, Redford McQueen, James C. Hutchinson, Tony Long, Barry Blevins, and Acra Cretsinger. «tab»Flower-bearers were ladies of the church and neighbors. «tab»Lewis Gentry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
