- Melissa H. Slater - December 16, 1832 - April 14, 1891. Daughter of Brayton and Philena Westcott Slater. Wife of Charles E. Russell.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, April 18, 1891 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died, at her home, near New Haven village, on April 14th, 1891, Mrs. Charles E. Russell, aged 58 years. Melissa H. Slater was born in the town of Richland, December 16, 1832, and was one of a family of nine children. She was a daughter of the late Brayton Slater, formerly of South Richland. The subject of this sketch was married to the now bereaved husband, Charles E. Russell, in 1851, and removed to this town about seven years ago. Of this marriage only a daughter, Mrs. Hollister Wallace, of a family of three children, survive. About one year ago an article was published in the Democrat relative to five generations in one family, of whom the deceased was 2d. Within six months three out of the five generations have died, to wit: Old Mrs. Slater, next the baby of Mrs. Calkins and now Mrs. Russell. Mrs. Russell was a member of three prominent organizations to wit: Good Templars, Women's Relief Corps and the W. C. T. U., all of which were represented at the funeral. A very affecting sermon was given at the house by the pastor, Rev. C. H. Walton, and appropriate music by the choir of the M. E. church, of which the deceased was a member. The interment was at Sand Hill and eight loaded wagons were necessary to take all the friends to the cemetery. The Good Templars took charge of the services at the grave which were very impressive. The deceased sister will be greatly missed in the community and the three organizations above named, but most of all by the daughter and the lonely husband, who has been her companion for over thirty-nine years. Com. Demster, April 18, 1891.
