Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 3, 1938 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Port Ontario Girl Meets Tragic Death At Pine Grove - Lillian Smith, 11, Drowned In River - Lillian, the 11-year-old and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Smith of Port Ontario, met a tragic death shortly after noon last Thursday when she was drowned in Salmon river near the Dr. Humbert cottage at Pine Grove Lillian had gone to Pine Grove with her father and two younger brothers, Irving 7 and Paul 3. The father was engaged in some construction work for one of the summer residents and the children had gone along with him for an afternoon play spell at the beach nearby. It was while they were playing in the shallow water near the Humbert dock that Lillian ventured out too far and, not being able to swim, was caught by the current then running in the river and carried into deep water. The other children ran and informed their father, but the little girl had been swept out of sight before he could reach the place where the children had been playing. An alarm was spread and help soon arrived, but it was about 45 minutes before the body was located and recovered. In the meantime Drs. A. B. Thompson and John H. L. Mason of Pulaski, had arrived at the scene and as soon as the body was brought to shore the work of resuscitation began. This continued for nearly an hour, but the victim had been in the water too long and could not be revived. Lillian was born in Howardville, December 15, 1926, and came to the vicinity of Port Ontario when about six months old. She was an unusually bright active child, an honor pupil in the Port Ontario school and capable as a helper to her parents in the conduct of their tourist house and fish bait business, as well as general housework. Besides her parents and two brothers she leaves to mourn her passing an older brother, Irving, 13. The funeral was held at the home Saturday with the Rev. A. E. Lawrence officiating. Burial was in Daysville cemetery. [Note: Irving, 13 is a typo, and is actually Lucian H. Smith]
