James I. Nash, 59, of 12051 Route 178, died Sunday evening at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where he had been admitted Wednesday after being injured on the job.
Michael R. Flick, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation in Region 7, said Mr. Nash's death is under investigation. He said Mr. Nash was working alone at the Jefferson County Subresidency in Adams when he apparently fell.
It's unclear, Mr. Flick said, if the head injuries Mr. Nash suffered occurred before or after he fell. He said Mr. Nash was "conscious but not lucid" when he was taken from Adams to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
Mr. Nash worked on the family farm on Nash Road, town of Ellisburg, until he went to work for the state Department of Transportation, working out of the Adams state highway barn. He moved to Route 178 in the early 1980s.
Born March 18, 1943, in the town of Ellisburg, son of Andrew and Bertha Loomis Nash, he graduated from Belleville Central School in 1961 and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
He enjoyed hunting and repairing various types of firearms.
Surviving are two sisters, Virginia Atkinson, Sandy Pond, and Loretta Drake, Port Ontario; two brothers, Harold N., North Carolina, and Marshall, Henderson, and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Lillian Wood, and two brothers, Norman and Alden, died before him.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with the Rev. Sally Heiligman, rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Pulaski, officiating. Burial will be in Ellisburg Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
