MAN PLEADS INNOCENT TO DWI THOMAS W. WHEELER OF ALTMAR IS ACCUSED IN AN ACCIDENT THAT KILLED A SYRACUSE MAN.
      Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - April 25, 1996Browse Issues
An Altmar man, facing drunken-driving charges in the death Friday of a Syracuse man, was arraigned Wednesday in Town Court.

Thomas W. Wheeler, 52, pleaded not guilty about 10 a.m. to two counts of driving while intoxicated and a count of vehicular manslaughter, said Justice Ernest J. Mance III of Richland Town Court. Mance was a visiting judge in Orwell.

Wheeler posted $1,000 cash bail and is to appear May 1 in Orwell Town Court, Mance said.

Wheeler was charged with DWI at University Hospital in Syracuse a day after the accident that killed Joseph R. Trumble, 33, of Tanner Road, Syracuse.

Oswego County Assistant District Attorney Donald Todd said Wednesday that the sheriff's department told him Wheeler had a blood-alcohol level of 2.2 percent.

Undersheriff Reuel A. Todd said Wheeler was driving, with Trumble as a passenger, when Wheeler's 1984 Mercury went off county Route 2 in Orwell shortly before 7 p.m. Friday.

Wheeler had been driving east on Route 2 when his car drifted off the right shoulder and struck a guardrail, Undersheriff Todd said.

Trumble was pronounced dead at the scene. Wheeler was taken to University Hospital.

Trumble was buried Tuesday, said his aunt, Sharon Sampson of Altmar. She said she would support Wheeler.

"We don't blame Mr. Wheeler at all," Sampson said Wednesday.

Wheeler and Trumble were friends as well as distant relatives, Sampson said.

She said Trumble, an Altmar native, had moved with his family to Syracuse three years ago.

Trumble, a father of four young children and stepfather of his wife's two children, had a scrap metal business, JMT Hauling, in Syracuse, Sampson said.

She said Wheeler had been working for Trumble and stayed overnight at Trumble's house Thursday.

Wheeler was driving Trumble to visit his sister, Julie Trumble of Altmar, when the accident occurred, Sampson said.

SYRACUSE MAN KILLED IN ORWELL CAR CRASH THE ALTMAR RESIDENT DRIVING THE VEHICLE IS CHARGED WITH DWI.
Syracuse Herald American (NY) - April 21, 1996Browse Issues
Oswego County sheriff's investigators charged an Altmar man with driving while intoxicated Saturday, the day after he was involved in a car accident that killed a Syracuse man.

Oswego County Undersheriff Reuel Todd said Thomas W. Wheeler, 52, was arrested and charged with DWI at University Hospital in connection with the crash that killed 33-year-old Joseph R. Trumble of Tanner Road, Syracuse.

"Wheeler was placed under arrest at the hospital, where blood was drawn for testing," Todd said.'

Todd said Wheeler was driving with Trumble as a passenger when Wheeler's 1984 Mercury went off county Route 2 in Orwell shortly before 7 p.m. Friday.

The car had been traveling east on Route 2 when it drifted off the right shoulder and struck a guardrail, Todd said. Trumble was pronounced dead at the scene by Oswego County Assistant District Attorney Donald Todd, who also serves as a deputy county coroner.

Wheeler was transported to the Syracuse hospital, where a nursing supervisor said he was listed in fair condition Saturday.

Wheeler and Trumble were friends as well as distant relatives, said Trumble's aunt, Sharon Sampson of Altmar.

He was driving Trumble to visit his sister Julie Trumble of Altmar when the accident occurred, Sampson said.

Sampson said she doesn't blame Wheeler for the accident.

"It could happen to most anybody," she said. "No one is angry, just hurt and confused as to why such a senseless thing has to happen."

She said Trumble is also survived by two brothers, three sisters and six stepsisters.

Todd said Tom Wheeler is the brother of Oswego County Sheriff's Investigator Robert Wheeler, who spent some time Saturday consoling Trumble's relatives.
