- Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 25, 1899 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Prof. Edward Orton - Columbus, Ohio, October 17 ¬Prof. Edward Orton, PhD, L.L.D., of the Ohio State University, died suddenly yesterday at his home in this city of heart disease. Prof. Orton was one of the most distinguished geologists of America, and was honored last year by selection to the presidency of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, presiding at Columbus meeting. He had been, since 1885, state geologist, his official report in that capacity forming a most valuable contribution to geological science. He was born March 9, 1829, at Deposit, New York, and received his earlier education on a farm. He graduated from Hamilton College, in 1848 and studied theology at Lane seminary. He was president of Antioch College when, in 1873, he was called to the presidency of the Ohio State University, in the city. He resigned that position in 1881, but retained a professorship in geology. Several years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, but recovered sufficiently to continue his university work up to a few days ago. Dr. Orton was widely known as a lecturer. -Toledo Blade.
Mr. Orton was a relative of all the Orton's in this county and was here on a visit about two years ago. It was he that wrote up the history of the Orton family which traces their ancestry back to Thomas Orton, who settled in Connecticut in 1641. The great-grandchildren of Joseph Orton are the 11th generation down from Thomas Orton. Prof. Orton was expected to be present last year at the Orton reunion but owing to his poor health had to aive it up at a late day much to the regret of all his friends.
