Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, December 15, 1898 Ogdensburg Times - Ogdensburg, New York - Horrible Suicide - Horace L. North, Proprietor of Woodville Hotel, Kills Himself in a Shocking Manner - Poor Health the Cause - One of the most shocking suicides recorded in Northern New York occurred in Jefferson County Tuesday. A special from Adams gives the following detail of the affair: Horace L. North, landlord of the Woodville Hotel committed suicide this morning. Mr. North went into a closet off the dining room and placed a double barreled shotgun to his throat and pulled both triggers. The shot tore a terrible gash in his throat, nearly severing the head from the body. Death was instantaneous. Mr. North was about 50 years of age, and had conducted the hotel at that place for about eight years. He previously lived in Sandy Creek, where he ran a restaurant. He leaves a wife and one child. Mr. North has been in poor health for the past two or three years, and was thought by some to be insane.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, December 21, 1898 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Suicide at Woodville - Tuesday morning, December 6, at 10:30, Horace North, proprietor of the Woodville Hotel, aged fifty years, killed himself in a closet of the hotel, shooting himself in the head with a double barrel shotgun and nearly severing the head from the body. Mr. North was a former resident of Sandy Creek and went to Woodville some ten years since. For many years he conducted a saloon where Mrs. Kate Brewer now resides, and made considerable money. He was always prosperous financially but was quick-tempered and somewhat erratic. While running the saloon here he nearly succeeded in committing suicide by cutting his throat. This attempt led to his retirement to a small farm on the Ridge road, where he resided until he went to Woodville. Of late he has been full of imaginary financial troubles and continually brooded over the smallest matters. Mrs. North, who is a most estimable woman, has the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held at nine o'clock a.m., interment at Daysville. -News.
Newspaper Article - Wednesday, December 28, 1898 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Port Ontario - The notice given in the Democrat last week taken from the News of the suicide at Woodville, of H. L. North, was wrong in many particulars. The deceased never cut his throat, he was not fifty years old, he had not lived in Woodville ten years and his head was not nearly severed from his body, besides other minor matters were far from right. We say this as one who knows.
