Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday, May 3, 1988 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York -Frank K. Ward, Ex-Lighthouse Keeper, Dies - Frank K. Ward, 79, Riverview Apartments, former lighthouse keeper and a retired member of the U.S. Coast Guard, died Monday morning in Edward John Noble Hospital's Skilled Care Unit, Alexandria Bay, after a short illness. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, Pulaski, with Rev. Dale E. Austin, pastor of the Clayton and Depauville United Methodist churches, officiating. Burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Edward John Noble Hospital or the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife, Sara; two sons, David F., Underhill, Vermont., and Herbert N., Liverpool; four grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Max (Ruby) Geer, Fernwood, and Mrs. I. Ray (Virginia) Geer, Lowville. Three brothers, Edward, Charles and Oswald, and a sister, Ruth Youngs, died before him Born March 20, 1909, at Horse Island Lighthhouse Station, on Lake Ontario near Sackets Harbor, a son of George and Ione Holloway Ward, he attended Sackets Harbor and Oswego schools. He married Sara Robbins in 1928. Mr. Ward was a member of the U.S. Lighthouse Service for many years, serving several stations on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. In 1938, he became a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a chief boatswain mate in 1957. In 1951, he was awarded a plaque by the Coast Guard after rescuing two men after their boat had been swamped near Fishers Landing. At that time, he was the lighthouse keeper on Rock Island. He later worked for 10 years as a carpenter at Fort Drum, retiring as a foreman of the carpenter shop. From 1939 to 1985, he lived at Fishers Landing, where he did volunteer maintenance work for his friends and neighbors. In 1985, he moved to Riverside Apartments. He was a member of the Fishers Landing and Omar United Methodist churches and the Clayton Masonic Lodge.
