      Sandra J. Gayne, 58, of 22897 Swan Road, died Wednesday evening of cancer at her home, where she was under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

      Mrs. Gayne had worked for P&C in Gouverneur and Watertown, and A&P and Great American, both in Watertown. She was office manager for Dr. Burton Silver from 1985 until January of this year.

      Born Jan. 7, 1944, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Ralph and Florence Westerdick Burgess, she graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1962.

      She married Lyle C. Gayne on June 15, 1963, in Ogdensburg and the couple lived in Richville before moving to Watertown in November 1972.

      She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of the church's Altar and Rosary Society, and volunteered for the church's bingo games and May Festival. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors.

      Surviving besides her husband are two sons and their wives, Robert L. and Julie, Watertown, and James F. and Leslie, Brownville; two daughters and their husbands, Lynn and Ronald Rowe and Cheri and Keith LaMarche, all of Dexter; a stepson and his wife, Lyle C. Jr. and Becky Gayne, address unavailable; two brothers, Robert and Stephen Burgess, both of Ogdensburg; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Roach, Ogdensburg, Diana Mott, Vernon, Conn., Mrs. Ronald (Patricia) Brann, Carson City, Nev., and Mrs. Frank (Theresa) Ayers, Carmichael, Calif., eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

      A son, Mark V., died before her.

      A prayer service will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church with the Rev. Clyde A. Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.

      Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
