      Patricia A. Gayne, 84, Penfield, formerly of 26989 Black River Road, died Monday at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.

      Mrs. Gayne was formerly a stenographer in the Watertown area.

      Born March 28, 1916, Watertown, daughter of William and Mary Ellen McGurl Lambert, she was a graduate of LaFargeville High School and the Watertown School of Commerce.

      She married Richard W. Chambers on Sept. 4, 1937, at Holy Family Church with the Rev. Harold L. Skelly officiating. The marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She married Kenneth Valentine Gillette on May 10, 1958, with County Judge Milton A. Wiltse presiding in his chambers in the Unity building. Mr. Gillette died July 14, 1974. She married Arthur G. Gayne in January 1976 in Watertown. He died Dec. 6, 1997.

      Mrs. Gayne was a former chairwoman of the board of directors of Literacy Volunteers.

      Surviving are three daughters, Margaret A. Chambers, Fort Myers, Fla., Jean C. Belmont, Penfield, and Mrs. Donald (Katherine E.) Dudek, Penfield; a sister, Emily Dupree, Watertown; a brother, Bertrand Lambert, Pulaski; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

      The funeral will be at the convenience of the family. The body will be cremated.

      There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Nulton Funeral Home, Penfield.
