Margaret L. VanAlstyne, 78, of 1010 Washington St., formerly of 384 Colorado Ave., died Sunday at Samaritan Medical Center.
Mrs. VanAlstyne owned and operated Commodore Restaurant on Factory Street from 1970 to 1980, then worked as cafeteria manager for Ohio Street School until retiring in 1995.
She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and enjoyed reading, playing cards and her bridge club membership.
Born Feb. 14, 1927, in Black River, daughter of Floyd and Louise Staie Gayne, she graduated in 1945 from Augustinian Academy, Carthage.
She married Evans D. VanAlstyne on Feb. 13, 1947, at Holy Family Church with the Rev. Frederick P. Shue officiating. Mr. VanAlstyne was a papermaker at Knowlton Bros. Paper Co., retiring in 1986, after 40 years of service. He died Dec. 16, 1998.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, David and Sue, Tullahoma, Tenn., Peter and Elizabeth, Oswego, and Ronald and Darra, Port Orange, Fla.; two daughters and their husbands, Yolanda "Lonnie" and Richard Hahn, Webster, and Linda and Gregory Buker, Watertown; a brother, Verne Gayne, Port Ritchie, Fla., 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The youngest of 12 children, Mrs. VanAlstyne was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.
Burial will be in Depauville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
