      Rex McNitt, 79, of 1190 County Route 15, died Wednesday at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse.

      Mr. McNitt was deputy sheriff in Oswego County for 20 years, retiring as sergeant in 1976. He then worked as a lineman for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. for 10 years, retiring in 1986.

      Born Feb. 25, 1923, in Boylston, son of Leon and Reda Holley McNitt, he graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1942 and served in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945.

      He married Marie Barnes on Dec. 24, 1945. She died March 31, 1964. He married Phyllis Burr on May 22, 1965, in Park United Methodist Church, Pulaski.

      He was a member and former fire chief of Lacona Volunteer Fire Dept., former member/director of Northern Oswego County Ambulance, Pulaski, retired town of Boylston judge, member of Pulaski American Legion Post 358, member and past commander of Lacona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8534, member of Fraternal Order of Police, member of Sandy Creek United Methodist Church and former town of Boylston board member.

      Surviving besides his wife are three sons and their wives, Doug and Linda and Dale and Shirley, all of Lacona, and Dean and Michelle, Cicero; a brother, Elmer, Adams, 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

      A brother, Leland, died before him.

      The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek, with the Rev. Brian Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Boylston Wesleyan Cemetery, Lacona.

      Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
