Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, April 26, 1928 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Mrs. George H. Mellen died Monday, April 16, 1928 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Michael Mackey, in Syracuse. Mrs. Mellen, who before her marriage was Louise Campbell Word, was born in Palestine, Texas, August 9, 1867. Her mother died when she was born. Her father was a lawyer in Palestine, and during the Civil War served as an officer in the Southern Army. Mrs. Mellen was adopted by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Campbell and lived in New Orleans for a few years. Then they moved to Sullivan, Ohio, the birthplace of Mr. Mellen. Mrs. Mellen graduated from the Wellington, Ohio High School and attended Bethany College, Bethany, West Virginia, for three years, studying art and religious training. While at school in Wellington she met Mr. Mellen who was visiting in Ohio with his mother. They were married November 17, 1892, and came immediately to Richland, New York. Twenty-one years ago they came to Syracuse and conducted a grocery store for ten years. A year ago Mrs. Mellen spent the winter in Texas visiting all the relatives there and in Ohio. Mrs. Mellen was an active worker in the Church of Christ at Richland and also in the South Geddes Street Church of Christ at Syracuse. W. B. Smith conducted the funeral service in Syracuse, which was largely attended by friends and church people. George H. Doust, pastor of the South Geddes Street Church of Christ accompanied the relatives and friends to Richland and conducted the services in the Church of Christ there. She was laid to rest in the Richland Cemetery just a little way from the place where she began her married life. The display of flowers assured everyone that Mrs. Mellen had many warm friends. Mrs. Mellen is survived by her husband, George Mellen, a daughter Mrs. Michael Mackey and a grandson, Richard Mackey of Syracuse, her step-mother, Mrs. Kate B. Word, two brothers John and Thomas Word, and a sister, Mrs. Jettie McCann of Palestine, Texas. The family wish to express their thanks and appreciation for the services rendered both in Syracuse and Richland. Mr. Mellen was a former merchant in Richland, doing business where the Wilson store is now located. He was highly instrumental in the building of the Vorea Church.
