- William O. Drake, 86, of 151 N. Main Street, passed away Saturday (May 30, 2009) at the Hornell Gardens. Born in Hornell, March 10, 1923, the son of William H. and Mary Perry Drake, he had resided in Hornell his entire life. He was a graduate of Hornell High School, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Hornell. Bill served his country as a member of the United States Army during WWII, and was a member of the Hornell American Legion Post. He had been employed as a supervisor at Stern & Stern Textiles in Hornell until his retirement. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman, was very active in the scouting program, an avid sports enthusiast, and an especially ardent New York Yankees fan. He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Phyllis Burley; and three brothers, Malcolm, Thorl and Perry Drake. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Burdett Drake, whom he married on May 1, 1947; three sons, William J., Daniel W., and Douglas M.(Lynda) Drake, all of Hornell; one sister, Yvonne ?Bub? Stilson of Geneva; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Zachary, Holly, Emma, Catie and Hayley; and two great-grandchildren. The family will be present to receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell. A graveside service will take place at the Hornell Rural Cemetery at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Michael Childs officiating.
