      RETIRED DEER RIVER MAN DIES
      Nicholas J. Shafty, 85, Stricken with Heart Attack--Rites Sunday.
      Deer River, Feb. 18--Nicholas J. Shafty, 85, a retired Deer River farmer, died of a heart attack in the emergency room of the Lewis County General hospital, Lowville, this morning at 9:45.
      The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Deer River Congregational church. Burial will be in Deer River cemetery.
      Friends may call at the family home Friday and Saturday.
      Surviving Mr. Shafty are his wife, Mrs. Emma Houghton Schantz Shafty, a daughter, Mrs. John (Emma) Zecher, Denmark; a sister, Mrs. Nelson Hastings, Carthage. Three grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
      Mr. Shafty was born in the town of Boylston, Sept. 24, 1879, a son of the late George and Elizabeth Reed Shafty. He moved to Great Bend in 1901 and the following year moved to Denmark where he operated a farm until his retirement in 1946, when he moved to Deer River.
      He married Miss Josephine Dunbar, Nov. 6, 1901, in Boylston. She died Feb. 17, 1955. On March 24, 1959, he married Mrs. Emma Houghton Schantz at her Denmark home.
      Mr. Shafty was a member of the Deer River Congregational church, a past master of Denmark Grange 535 and a past officer of the G. L. F.
