- Doris Louise Halsey Pond Benoit - February 13, 1920 - March 15, 2009. Biological daughter of Roy Don and Florence Louise Pond Halsey. Adopted daughter of Winfield Deforest and Della Louise Cross Pond. Wife of Paul Grosvenor Benoit.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, March 18, 2009 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Doris P. Benoit, 89, formerly of Adams Center, died Sunday at Friendly Home, Rochester, where she had been a resident for about a year. Mrs. Benoit taught for a year in a one-room school house in East Watertown. She later was an elementary school librarian in the Phoenix Central and Liverpool School districts. Born in 1920 in Pulaski, daughter of Roy and Florence Halsey, she was adopted at the age of 3 weeks by her uncle and aunt, W.D. and Della Pond, following the death of her birth mother from the flu. She attended and graduated grade and high school in Adams Center. She later graduated, in 1940, from Potsdam Normal School and in 1964 from SUNY Oswego with a bachelor's degree. She also did graduate work in library science at Syracuse University. She married Paul G. Benoit, then a lieutenant in the Army, on July 26, 1941. He died January 26, 2003. Mrs. Benoit was a member of Order of Eastern Star, where she served as R.W. grand chaplain for the state, and was a hospice volunteer for a number of years. Surviving are two sons, Philip, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Douglas, Phoenix; two daughters, Judith Cole, Burlington, Vermont, and Sue Benoit Miller, Pittsford; four grandchildren and a great-grandson. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at United Church of Pittsford, 123 S. Main Street. Arrangements are with Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Honeoye Falls.
