- William E. Dunlap was born to William I. & Jane (Campbell) Dunlap on April 9, 1753 in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. His father was born in Ayr, Scotland and his mother in Londondeery, Ulster, Ireland. In March of 1741/1742 William married Eleanor DeLong in New York. William & Eleanor had 8 children: William S., Eleanor, Smith, Samuel, John Allen, Gardiner, Jane Ann & Rachel.
William was a private in Col Samuel Campbell's First Regiment of Tryon Co. NY Militia. To belong to the Militia, you were required to have a gun with either a sword, bayonet, or tomahawk, plus 1 pound of gunpowder and 3 pounds of bullets. They trained for 4 hours a month on the first of the each month.
William passed away in 1817 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek, NY.
