Newspaper Obituary - Thursday March 25, 1886 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - South Richland District - In last week's Democrat we noticed the death of Mr. Lewis Conant. We feel that our work would be incomplete if we made no farther mention of this old resident and neighbor. Mr. Conant was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1806, and at the age of three was left without a father; but as a good many of our readers know, he possessed a purpose which must have been his in boyhood and which he firmly adhered to in after years. He was the first keeper of the old light house which may be seen today at Selkirk. In later years he made Holmesville his home, not the present homestead, but nearly a mile beyond in a log house which had long since gone to ruin. This was the birth place of some of the children. Twenty-one years ago the companion of his youthful choice sickened and died, leaving in his care an invalid daughter, with the admonition to be father and mother to the unfortunate one, which up to his death he has faithfully done. Nearly two months age he was taken seriously ill and, it being his wishes not to be moved, Mr. and Mrs. William Conant left their home and went to him, doing all in their power to relieve his sufferings and attend to his wants. He was pleasant and uncomplaining through his sickness, telling them often that he hoped to wait on himself soon. But on the 14th, at the age of more than four score, his tired spirit took flight and left these faithful watchers with folded hands, and it may truly be said they have done what they could. For twelve years he was justice of the peace, holding his office at Holmesville. Thus the town loses through his death a once active citizen and his children a kind father. Adin Conant, of Ohio, Elhane Conant of Minnesota, Mrs. Ezra Pride, of Utica, William Conant and Miss Ann Conant, of this place, are left to cherish the memory of these dear ones and the past. His funeral services were held at the Baptist church on the 15th. Rev. Barnes, of Mexico, spoke to a well filled house who had gathered to pay their last respects to their friend and neighbor.
March 14, 1886 - Lewis Conant, age 80 years, 1 month, 26 days, Farmer, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Resident of Richland Township for 55 years, Son of William Conant and Martha Fobes, died in Richland Township of heart disease.
