- Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 22, 1894 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Sewell Town Gates - Another of Pulaski's aged and highly respected citizens has passed out from among us, but his memory will long be cherished as being a man of rare integrity of character. Sewell T. Gates was born at Winfield, Herkimer county, New York, September 22d, 1815, and died in Pulaski at 3:45 a.m., August 21st, 1894. When fourteen years of age he removed with his parents to South Richland in this town where he lived until 1861 when he removed to Pulaski, purchasing the house where he has lived ever since, of Captain Chapman. Robert Gates, deceased, of this town, was a brother of Mr. Gates. His sisters, also deceased, were: Mrs. Emily Whipple, of Salmon River, and Mrs. Hiram Lewis, of this town. Our townsman, the subject of this sketch, was married to Miss Mary A. Richards, of South Richland, October 15, 1839, and with whom he lived very happily until the time of her death, which occurred in June, 1874. No children resulted from the union but they adopted a daughter, now Mrs. F. H. Cross, who has ever since resided with the deceased. His daughter, with marked devotion, has given him every possible care and attention during his long and painful illness, as also has Mr. Cross and his son, W. G. Cross. Until his retirement from business and his removal to Pulaski, Mr. Gates was a farmer. He was, also, unusually successful in his chosen occupation. For three years in the early sixties, or during the war, Mr. Gates was supervisor of this town. He was very active and efficient in the work of raising soldiers, paying bounties, and in other patriotic work of those exciting times. Subsequently he was for many years an assessor. He had exceptionally good judgment in real estate values, and his opinion was often sought in such matters. His reputation was such that he was often made executor of estates and he always did his work well. For nearly three years he has had a heart difficulty, and when he fell last March and broke an arm he has slowly failed ever since, and until the end came. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at his late residence on Salina street, Rev. A. D. Webster conducting the ceremony. Interment will take place in the South Richland cemetery.
