Newspaper Obituary - January 21, 1886 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In Redwood, New York, January 14, 1886, of quick consumption, Rev. Erastus D. Cross, in the 55th year of his age. Bro. Cross passed the larger part of his life in the town of Richland. He became a Christian in early life, and was ordained to the pastorate of the Palermo Baptist church some fourteen or fifteen years ago. Subsequently he served as pastor of the churches at South Richland, South Hannibal and Redwood. These pastorates, while making large demands for care and labor, were not able to furnish liberal support, thus testing our brother's strength too heavily; but he was always faithful, often doing an amount of work which would appall some who receive many times the salary given to Bro. Cross. He "died in the harness," continuing to preach up to a few weeks before his death. He was a lovely Christian character, and he was greatly beloved. Brief funeral services were held at Redwood on January 15. On January 16 another service was held at South Richland, where a large audience assembled to express their esteem for the deceased and their sympathy with his family. Burial took place in the cemetery on the Mexico road. Bro. Cross leaves a wife and four children and a large circle of friends to cherish his memory.
