      Newspaper Obituary - Monday, May 19, 2003 - Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Richard M. Gates, Retired Postmaster - Richard M. Gates, 76, of 4789 Salina Street, died Saturday at his home. Mr. Gates worked at the Pulaski post office for 38 years, retiring as postmaster in 1981. Born August 18, 1926, in Orwell, son of A. Maurice and Flossie Morgan Gates, he graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1944 and was in the Navy during World War II, serving from 1944 to 1946. He married Lois DeLong on September 2, 1949, at Pulaski Congregational Church. He was a member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358, was a former coach of Pulaski Little League and one of the league's original organizers, was a former member of Pulaski zoning board and a former member of Northern Oswego County Health Services board of directors. Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Richard M. Jr., Pickerington, Ohio, Jamie A., Wilmington, North Carolina, Robert J., Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Timothy J., Little York; two daughters, Anne Gates, Oswego, and Mary Jane Montgomery, Raleigh, North Carolina; a sister, Jane Doran, North Syracuse, and 13 grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
