- He was often referred to as J. Bennett Smith.
He married his first wife, Loretta Constant Ryan (or Loretta Constant) in 1863. She died of "obstruction of the bowels," (possibly due to Cancer). They had two children together.
He married his cousin, Margaret Moister Bennett (who had been married previously to Michael Scott) on Sept. 5, 1900. She had a daughter by her first marriage.

J. BENNETT SMITH, OF KINGSTON, DIED TODAY
J. Bennett Smith, who by reason of his genial personality had a wide acquaintance throughout the Wyoming Valley, died this morning at 6:45 o’clock at his home, 280 Chestnut Street, Kingston, following a brief illness of pneumonia. Mr. Smith’s death occurred at the age of 86, but despite his advance years he took an active interest in the affairs of the community, having been of rugged physique and unusually hale for a man of his age.
For a number of years Mr. Smith had been engaged in no special occupation, but his business career of former years was an active one. He was formerly affiliated with the Lehigh & Wilkesbarre Coal Co. and the Hazard Rope Works.
Mr. Smith was born in Wilkesbarre in 1834 and lived in that community his entire life. He was the last surviving member of the Sassafrass Club, which was a hive organization fifty years ago. Mr. Smith was a member of the Wilkesbarre Press Club. He was a writer of ability and often contributed articles to the various newspapers.
The surviving members of the family are Mr. Smith’s wife and two childen.
The funeral will be held from the family home on Satuday afternoon.

Funeral of J. Bennett Smith
The funeral of J. Bennett Smith was held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from his late residence, 220 Chestnut Street, Kingston. Hundreds of people paid final respect to the aged man and the numerous floral offerings were witnesses of the high regard in which he was held. Services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Ferdinand von Krug and Rev. E. Flack. The pall bearers were Edwar Miles, Hugh Murray, Walter Lewis, E.L. Crisman, James B. Lewis and Allen J. Smith. Interment was in Forty Fort Cemetery.
