    • Mrs. Doris Zufelt, Gold Star Mother, Dies in Hospital

      Mrs. Doris Howard Zufelt, 56, Gold Star mother and former practical nurse in this community, died August 27, 1946 in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she had been a patient for several weeks.

      She was the daughter of the late Bert Howard and Mrs. Mary Curtis Howard and spent the early part of her life in Ellisburg. In 1904 she was married to Edwin Zufelt, who was killed in 1931 in an automobile accident.

      Mrs. Zufelt was for many years a practical nurse and was in great demand in her profession. As a nurse, she went out of her way to help others. She was a member of the Sandy Creek Methodist Church.

      Mrs. Zufelt was one of the town's Gold Star mothers, her son, Rex Zufelt, having been killed in action at Le Havre, France.

      She is survived by one son, Bert Zufelt, of Fulton; a daughter, Mary, Mrs. Holley Russell of Syracuse; her mother, Mrs. Mary Howard and one brother, George Howard, both of Sandy Creek; by four grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

      Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Weston & Woodard funeral home, Rev. Herbert Harrison, pastor of Sandy Creek Methodist church, officiating.

      Burial was in Ellisburg
