Ramon W. "Ray" Russell, 81, Baldwinsville, formerly of Malone, died Thursday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Syracuse.
Mr. Russell was sports editor and then managing editor of the Malone Telegram, where he was employed from 1955 to 1985. He had lived in the Syracuse area for the past five years.
He was a life member of Centenary United Methodist Church and attended Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, North Syracuse, where he sang in the choir.
He also was a member and past president of the Malone Central School Board of Education and was active in several area civic organizations, receiving Malone's Sports Hall of Fame Award in 2000.
Born in Malone, son of George H. and Orel Mulaniff Russell, he graduated in 1941 from Franklin Academy.
He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and then attended Florida Southern College, receiving a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1946.
He married Helen Maher on Jan. 15, 1960, at Centenary Methodist Church.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons and their wives, Ramon W. Jr. "Bill" and Anne, Memphis, Tenn., and Peter and Krista, Birmingham, Mich.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Donna and Donald Kennedy, Clay; a stepson and his wife, Earl D. and Carol Maher, Mattydale; five grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, four stepgranddaughters, six step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His first wife, the former Ruth Graves, three brothers and two sisters died before him.
The funeral was Monday at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial is in North Syracuse Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Fergerson Funeral Home, North Syracuse.

Ramon W. "Ray" Russell, 81, of Baldwinsville, died Thursday at Syracuse Veterans' Hospital. He was a native of Malone and had resided in this area for the past five years. He was a 1941 graduate of Franklin Academy of Malone. He entered the Army Air Corps and served in combat during WW II. He then attended Florida Southern College and received his B.A. degree in journalism in 1946. He was the sports editor and then managing editor for The Malone Telegraph, where he was employed from 1955 to 1985. He was a lifetime member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Malone and locally attended Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, N. Syracuse, and sang in their choir. He was a member and past president of Malone Central Schools Board of Education and was active in several area civic organizations. He received Malone's Sports Hall of Fame Award in 2000. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Ruth Graves, and three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Helen Maher; two sons, Bill (Anne) of Memphis, TN, and Peter (Krista) of Birmingham MI; a stepdaughter, Donna (Donald) Kennedy of Clay; a stepson, Earl D. (Carol) Maher of Mattydale; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four stepgranddaughters; six stepgreat- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will be in North Syracuse Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 S. Main St., N. Syracuse.
