      Charles "Sonny" Shampine, 79, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur.

      Charles was born October 3, 1932 in Hermon, the son of Alfred and Inez Schwartfigure Shampine.

      Sonny attended Gouverneur schools before serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, and he retired as a sergeant from the National Guard in Canton.

      Sonny worked many years at St. Joe Lead Company, Balmat until retiring as a hoist man on the surface when the company was shutdown.

      He enjoyed hunting with his son, bowling, and backyard carpentry as he built three homes with his family's assistance.

      Sonny married Keiko Kyda on June 14, 1956.

      Charles is survived by two sons John Shampine and his companion Sandy Reynolds of Evans Mills, Jimmy Shampine and his companion Melody Sortino of Syracuse, a daughter JoAnn and Robert Kelsey of LaFargeville, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Walter Shampine of Alaska, a sister Isabelle Lewis of Troy, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a daughter Jane Shampine Pratt, several brothers and sisters.

      There is no funeral service and calling hours are Friday, March 30th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
