- GOUVERNEUR - Melinda J. Shampine, 24, Gouverneur, died Friday at her home.
Officers of the village Police Department were unavailable for comment Friday night, and a dispatcher said only that the death is under investigation.
Miss Shampine had been a licensed practical nurse at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, for about a year and a half.
Born June 15, 1984, in Gouverneur, a daughter of Donna D. Prashaw and John A. Shampine, she graduated in 2002 from Gouverneur Central School and from SUNY Canton with a degree in nursing.
She enjoyed taking care of her nieces and her friends' children.
Surviving besides her mother, of Gouverneur, and her father, of Evans Mills, are three brothers, Ryan J. and Todd M. Shampine, both of Gouverneur, and John C. Shampine, Harrisville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nicole A. and Shawn Sixberry and Christine J. Shampine, all of Harrisville; her maternal grandmother, Bonnie Barker, Antwerp; her paternal grandparents, Charles and Kiecko Shampine, Harrisville; eight nieces and a nephew.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at French Funeral Home with the Rev. Gregory Bailey officiating.
Burial will be in East Riverside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
